Beit-CURE Children’s Hospital of Malawi (CURE Malawi) has raised more than MWK 200 million from its annual Charity Golf Tournament held on 22 August at Limbe Country Club in Blantyre.
The tournament was part of CURE Malawi’s annual fundraising campaign, which aims to raise MWK 400 million to provide corrective surgery and care for 256 children with treatable physical disabilities across Malawi. The money raised will help children access specialised surgery for conditions such as clubfoot, bowed legs, knock knees, burn contractures, and limb-length differences.
Speaking during the prize presentation ceremony, CURE Malawi Executive Director Dr. Rhoda Jura Kriek emphasised how partnerships are key to the hospital’s work. “In order for us to be able to offer our services, we rely on partnerships to do our work … Every swing that you made today is for a good cause.”
CURE Malawi plans to carry out 3,000 surgeries in the 2026/27 financial year, which runs from July 2026 to June 2027. International donors have already provided funding for 2,744 surgeries.
The tournament attracted 54 golfers representing corporate partners supporting the fundraising campaign.
Partners Rally Behind CURE Malawi
The official fundraising partners were Sparc Systems and First Capital Bank. Other supporters included CFAO Mobility Malawi, NICO Group Malawi/NBS Bank, Cori Ltd, Old Mutual Malawi, Medical Aid Society of Malawi (MASM), CDH Investment Bank, and UGI Insurance. Mikozi, Malawi Sun Hotel and Conference Centre, Hartfield Investments, and Amaryllis Hotel also supported the campaign in kind.
Limbe Country Club hosted the tournament for the second consecutive year. Club Captain Gracious Changaya said the club was pleased to support CURE Malawi. “We all gathered here today to support CURE. By being here, you have touched a life somewhere, because today we were swinging to serve and heal a child somewhere.”
The overall winners were a team from NBS Bank, comprising Vitumbuko Gubuduza and Fiskani Chiyendawamba.
Gubuduza said she took part because of the impact of CURE Malawi’s work. “For me, it was very important to come out and play because it is for a very important cause. We are raising funds for CURE, which does important work. When you look at the outcomes of their surgeries and consider how they can change lives, you realise how important this cause is. It was encouraging to see so many people and companies come out to support the fundraising.”
Meeting the need for children’s surgery
A 2022 nationwide survey found that approximately 576,000 children in Malawi live with musculoskeletal conditions. An estimated 20,000 children could benefit from corrective surgery to prevent permanent disability.
Operating in Blantyre since 2002, Beit-CURE Children’s Hospital of Malawi is a specialised Christian non-profit teaching hospital that provides free orthopaedic and plastic reconstructive surgeries to children with physical disabilities.
The hospital treats children from across Malawi regardless of their families’ ability to pay.
The funds raised through the golf tournament will help CURE Malawi provide surgery and care to children who need specialised treatment but cannot afford it.
